Background

Complement protein, C9 is a single-chain glycoprotein with a molecular weight of 71 kD. The C9 protein is present in serum at a concentration of approximately 55 μg/ml. Upon activation of the Classical, Lectin or Alternative Complement Pathways, C9 becomes integrated into the Terminal Complement Complex (TCC). The Terminal Complement Complex (TCC) is the general term for both membrane bound C5b-9 (or Membrane Attack Complex; MAC) and fluid phase SC5b-9. Assessment of the TCC is an excellent marker for qualifying the extent of Terminal Pathway activation in vivo or in vitro. TCC can be deposited on the surface of transformed cells, biomaterials, and a variety of other surfaces.
