Thyroid Blocking Immunoglobulin (TBI) are antibodies against the TSHR that prevent TSH binding to the receptor causing an inhibition of TSH action and can induce hypothyroidism.
The thyrotropin receptor (TSHR) is a primary autoantigen in autoimmune thyroid disease (AITD). Autoantibodies (Ab) against the TSHR can be present either as functional thyroid-stimulating autoantibodies (TSI) causing Graves’ hyperthyroidism or as thyroid-blocking autoantibodies (TBI) causing hypothyroidism.
Measurement of these Thyroid Receptor Blocking autoantibodies can prove useful in the following areas:
- Differential diagnosis of thyroiditis (unexplained Goiter)
- Autoimmune Hashimoto‘s Thyroiditis (HT)
- Graves‘ disease: post radioactive iodine treatment and/or during therapy with antithyroid drugs (some patients having both stimulating and blocking antibodies simultaneously)
- Differential diagnosis of hypothyroidism; Autoimmune Thyroid Disease (AITD)
- Postpartum thyroid disease, possibly PP depression
- Autoimmune thyroid disease developing during pregnancy
- Pediatric monitoring
- Additional yet unknown applications
